Old Masters Gel Stain is a highly pigmented oil-based stain designed to achieve intense color on interior surfaces of bare or varnished wood, fiberglass, primed metal, and composite. <\/span>Its thick formula allows for easy application, which is necessary to achieve a rich, even color on most surfaces in a single coat. <\/span>Excellent for vertical surfaces, <\/span>as the product does not tend to run<\/span>. <\/span>May be used outdoors for specific projects when topcoated with a protective clear exterior finish.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where to use it?<\/b><\/p>\n

Gel stain is specially formulated for use on non-porous surfaces such as fiberglass, primed metal, and composite surfaces. <\/span><\/p>\n

For example, <\/span>you can use it on the exterior side of front and garage doors when using a protective clear exterior finish. <\/span> <\/p>\n

It is also suitable for applications on softwoods or hardwoods. <\/span>Thanks to its gel texture, it makes it easier to tackle large interior wood-staining projects on porous woods such as pine, birch, and hemlock. <\/span>This is because it gives you enough time to spread and wipe it evenly without lap marks on the surface.<\/span><\/p>\n

It can also be used on furniture that is already stained and varnished to slightly adjust the existing color, so you do not have to completely remove the current protective finish. <\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]Application on bare wood:<\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

Apply the stain generously with a brush or soft cloth and remove the excess by wiping in the direction of the grain. For a darker color, repeat with a second coat once the first coat is dry. For a lighter color, wipe with a cloth dampened with paint thinner before the stain dries. <\/span><\/p>\n

This method is not recommended for very large exterior wood surfaces, such as a patio or a wooden pergola. <\/span>Instead, reserve gel stain and marine varnish for decorative elements such as a wooden door or a bench.<\/span><\/p>\n

Application on fiberglass and composite surfaces:<\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

Stain one section or panel at a time. Apply a generous coat of gel stain with a firm synthetic brush or a lint-free cloth and work the stain evenly in the direction of the grain, removing brush marks while the stain is wet. Wipe the brush often on a lint-free cloth to remove excess stain. <\/span><\/p>\n

Application on painted surfaces:<\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

To create a simulated wood look, apply the stain to the painted surface with a foam or bristle brush using long, smooth strokes, always in the same direction. Do not wipe the stain with a cloth in order to preserve the faux wood effect. <\/span><\/p>\n

Application on previously finished surfaces:<\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

Sand the surface before application by hand with 180-grit. <\/span>Remove dust. Apply a generous coat of gel stain with a firm synthetic brush or a lint-free cloth and apply the stain evenly in the direction of the grain, removing brush marks while the stain is wet. Wipe the brush frequently on a lint-free cloth to remove excess stain.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you apply the stain outdoors, it is strongly recommended to apply a clear exterior topcoat, such as <\/span>Old Masters oil-based Marine Varnish.<\/span><\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n

Mixing and tinting<\/b><\/p>\n

Custom colors can be achieved by mixing colors or by adding up to 10 oz of universal or industrial colorant per gallon. The amount of colorant added may affect performance and extend dry time. To lighten gel stain, mix any proportion with Natural Gel Stain. Stir to a uniform consistency. DO NOT THIN. <\/span><\/p>\n

Drying time<\/b><\/p>\n

Dry to the touch: approx. 6 to 8 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before topcoating with an oil-based finish: minimum 12 to 24 hours<\/span><\/p>\n

Before topcoating with a water-based finish: minimum 48 hours<\/p>\n

(Depending on temperature, humidity, air circulation, and the amount of stain on the surface.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Surface preparation<\/b><\/p>\n

All surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of dirt, grease, glue, and other contaminants, otherwise penetration and adhesion will be affected. <\/span>Bare wood surfaces must be sanded evenly to remove mill glaze and open the pores. <\/span>Sand bare wood with 100-grit sandpaper (power sander) or 180-grit (by hand) for hardwoods such as oak, birch, and maple. <\/span>Use 120-grit (power sander) or 220-grit (by hand) for softer woods such as pine or hemlock.<\/span><\/p>\n

For painted, varnished, glossy, or non-porous surfaces, sand the surface before application by hand with 180-grit to promote gel stain adhesion. <\/span>Remove dust with a tack cloth or a lint-free cloth dampened with methyl hydrate. <\/span>Surface defects must be repaired with an appropriate repair material.<\/span><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]\n

Recommended topcoat<\/b>
\n<\/b>We recommend <\/span>Old Masters clear finishes<\/span><\/a>. <\/span> <\/p>\n

However, this stain can be topcoated with most clear varnishes. <\/span>A 12\u201324-hour stain dry time is recommended before applying a protective topcoat. <\/span><\/p>\n

When applying water-based finishes, wait a minimum of 48 hours <\/b>before applying the topcoat. If a lacquer topcoat is desired, test compatibility before use. <\/span>For exterior use, we suggest <\/span>Old Masters oil-based Marine Varnish.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]\n

Cleaning<\/b><\/p>\n

For tool cleanup, it is recommended to use a cleaning solvent such as paint thinner or mineral spirits. <\/span><\/p>\n

DANGER: Rags, steel wool, sanding residue, and other waste used with or soaked in this product may spontaneously ignite if improperly discarded. No ignition source is required for these materials to self-ignite. Immediately place rags, steel wool, sanding residue, and other waste used with or soaked in this product in a sealed metal container filled with water.
