Class “A” Fire-Retardant Varnish Topcoat<\/strong><\/p>\nFlame Control No. 167 polyurethane fire-retardant wood varnish is a Class “A” topcoat.<\/p>\n
It is used as a finish coat over No. 166 intumescent fire-retardant varnish. No. 167 is available in three finishes: low-gloss, semi-gloss, or gloss.<\/p>\n
No. 166 must be applied before No. 167<\/strong> to achieve a Class “A” fire rating.<\/p>\n* Note:<\/strong> For this fire-retardant product, the supplier does not provide a spread indication in minutes, but rather an effectiveness scale. How to apply<\/h2>\nPreparation<\/strong><\/h3>\nAfter applying Flame Control No. 166 Class “A” intumescent fire-retardant varnish, allow the surface to dry for at least 48 hours. Remove all dust, dirt, etc. from the surface before applying Flame Control No. 167.<\/p>\n
Application<\/strong><\/h3>\nFlame Control No. 167 topcoat can be applied by brush, roller, or spray.<\/p>\n
Stir the product well before use, then apply a uniform coat at a coverage rate of 600 to 800 sq ft\/US gallon (14.7 to 19.6 m\u00b2\/L).<\/p>\n
In high-traffic areas or where excessive wear is expected, a second coat is recommended. Allow at least 24 hours drying time between coats.<\/p>\n
To comply with the surface burning characteristics established for this varnish, dilution of the varnish must be offset by reduced coverage rates.<\/p>\n
Do not apply when surface or air temperature is below 10\u00baC.<\/p>\n

The varnish may be reduced with solvent up to a maximum of 7%.<\/strong><\/p>\nPrecautions<\/h3>\n
The liquid coating contains volatile (flammable) solvents. Caution should be exercised during and after application.<\/p>\n
\n- Adequate ventilation must be provided during and after application until the coating is dry.<\/li>\n
- Keep away from heat, sparks, and open flames. Do not smoke – extinguish all flames, pilot lights, and heaters – turn off stoves, electrical tools and appliances, and any other sources of ignition.<\/li>\n
- Avoid skin contact and inhalation of vapors or spray mist. Close container after use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Cleaning varnished surfaces<\/h3>\n
Never use water or water-based cleaners to clean surfaces finished with this system, as this will cause the surface appearance to become milky. \nNo. 167 is solvent-based. Water creates a reaction that produces a milky effect.<\/p>\n
Use only wood cleaners designed for solvent-based finishes.<\/p>\n
Q-My fire-retardant system doesn’t meet the standard\u2026 what did I do wrong?<\/strong><\/h4>\nYou must use No. 167 as a topcoat over No. 166 to achieve Class A.<\/p>\n
You don’t get complete, certified protection without the base coat.<\/p>\n
Q-The varnish doesn’t adhere well or has defects\u2026 why?<\/strong><\/h4>\nIn most cases, this is a preparation issue.<\/p>\n
The most common causes are:<\/p>\n
– a dirty or dusty surface
\n– The No. 166 coat is not completely dry.<\/p>\n
To avoid this:<\/p>\n
– wait a minimum of 48h after applying No. 166
