The fireplace is often where the entire atmosphere of a room comes together. Itâs where people gather to relax, talk, or simply enjoy the movement of the flames.
And since everyoneâs eyes eventually turn to it, you might as well give your fireplace mantel a finish that truly showcases it. Covering your fireplace mantel with a concrete effect can completely transform the space and create a much more modern, elegant style.
Whether you have a gas or wood-burning fireplace, this type of finish delivers a warm, clean, contemporary look that fits perfectly with todayâs interiors. Itâs also an excellent way to modernize an old mantel without having to rebuild everything.
With the right finish, your fireplace quickly becomes the focal point of the roomâand the atmosphere of your evenings will be transformed.

A fireplace mantel with a concrete effect
A concrete finish brings a style that is both contemporary, clean, and elegant. Its mineral look creates a beautiful contrast with the warmth and movement of the flames, making it a particularly popular choice for creating a modern fireplace wall.
Whether itâs to modernize an old mantel or to create a new surround around a gas or wood-burning fireplace, concrete manages to add plenty of character to the space without overwhelming the dĂ©cor.

Choose the effect that suits you: Raw concrete or polished concrete?
Les Décoratives products offer several types of concrete effects, allowing you to easily match the fireplace style to the rest of your interior design.
The Raw Concrete finish is ideal if you are looking for the authentic look of formed concrete. Its matte, natural, and slightly textured appearance adds plenty of character to a fireplace wall covering while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic. Itâs an excellent choice for creating a streamlined space with a more contemporary feel.
Loft Polished Concrete, on the other hand, more closely replicates the look of polished concrete with a smoother, slightly satin finish. The result is more chic and refined, adding a premium touch to a fireplace mantel. Its soft-to-the-touch surface works particularly well in elegant décors or more classic styles updated for today.

Covering your fireplace mantel with a concrete effect in 3 steps
1) Apply the bonding coat
The first step is to apply the bonding coat designed for the concrete-effect product you are using.
And be careful: a standard paint primer will not do the job here. Concrete-effect products used for a fireplace wall covering have a completely different composition than regular paint. They therefore need a suitable base to adhere properly to the surface.
For example, Loft products use a wall bonding coat specially formulated to create very strong adhesion thanks to a micro-anchoring system. This is the layer that allows the coating to bond properly to the fireplace mantel or the wall around the fireplace, without long-term adhesion issues.
In short, this step may seem technical, but it is essential for a durable finish and to avoid unpleasant surprises later on.
2) How do you apply the concrete effect?
The technique varies slightly depending on which Loft coating you use.
Raw Concrete
Once your bonding coat is completely dry, you can move on to applying the raw concrete effect (for polished concrete, we will cover that next).
- Dilute the included lime packet with the bucket in 150 ml of water. To avoid reactions, protect yourself with gloves. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then add the solution to the bucket.
- Mix Loft Raw Concrete using a paint mixer. Scrape the sides and bottom with a stick to make sure there are no lumps.
- Spread the coating using a putty knife. You can create different textures depending on your application technique. If you make flat movements with the trowel, the finish will be more textured. By positioning your trowel at a 45-degree angle to the wall, you will get a smoother result.
- Work on sections of 30 to 40 sq ft at a time. As soon as you finish a section, go over it again with a stainless steel trowel, varying your movements to create the texture and relief you want.
- Want a striking effect? Let it harden for about 2 hours and lightly dampen the concrete coating with a sponge. Use a trowel in circular motions. This will soften the edges and give you a more pronounced concrete texture.
- Let Loft Raw Concrete dry for 24 hours once the application is complete.
Polished concrete
For Polished Concrete, the application varies slightly.
- Use a stainless steel trowel. Avoid applying Polished Concrete too thickly. Otherwise, it may cause cracking in the finish.
- Press firmly with the flat of the trowel to smooth well and achieve a thin coat.
- After letting the coating dry for 4 hours, apply a second coat the same way.
- Wait another 8 hours after the final application, then use very fine steel wool (000) to achieve a chic waxed effect.
3) OPTIONAL â Do you want to keep your fireplace mantel from getting dirty? Add a finish!
If you want maximum washability, apply a finishing product to protect the surface. Without a protector, Loft Raw Concrete remains more porous and may stain more easily over time. Polished Concrete stains less thanks to its smoother finish.
Loft offers a clear protector that makes the surface more resistant and slightly water-repellent, while preserving the beautiful matte look of concrete. Itâs a good option if you want to keep your fireplace mantel clean longer without changing the look
- Apply the protector with a short-nap roller. Cross your strokes to cover the entire surface. Always finish by smoothing in the same direction.
- Let dry for 4 hours, then apply a second coat.

Q&A
Can a concrete effect be applied over an old painted fireplace mantel?
Yes, as long as you apply the bonding coat. An old fireplace mantel that has already been painted can be covered with a concrete effect, provided the surface is sound and the existing paint is still adhering properly.
However, if the paint is peeling, blistering, or already coming off, you will need to remove any unstable areas before you begin. Proper preparation remains essential to prevent the new coating from detaching over time.
Can the heat from the fireplace damage the concrete effect?
Normally not, since the heat should be contained within the fireplace and not spread into the fireplace mantel.
However, you must follow the clearance distances recommended by the fireplace manufacturer, especially for a wood-burning fireplace surround. Some areas directly exposed to intense heat may require specialized materials or additional protection.
The type of fireplace also changes the reality of the project: a gas fireplace generally emits more controlled heat than a traditional wood-burning fireplace.
Can the concrete effect crack over time?
Decorative micro-cracks can sometimes appear over time. This is also a feature found in real concrete.
However, significant cracks often indicate movement in the substrate beneath the coating. It is best to address the issue before reapplying the concrete effect.
Is a concrete finish difficult to maintain around a fireplace?
Not really.
Once protected with the right sealer, the coating becomes relatively easy to clean. Most of the time, a soft, slightly damp cloth is enough to remove dust or marks.
However, it is best to avoid highly abrasive or acidic cleaners that could damage the finish over time.
Can a concrete effect make a room darker or colder?
It mainly depends on the colour and texture you choose.
Very dark concrete in a small, poorly lit room can indeed create a more enveloping atmosphere. Conversely, light tones and softer textures can bring in a lot of light and create a warm dĂ©cor despite the materialâs mineral character.
Lighting, the materials around the fireplace, and even the presence of wood in the décor will greatly influence the final result.
Is a concrete effect only suitable for modern décors?
Not at all.
Even though concrete is often associated with contemporary interior design, it can also integrate beautifully into warmer, rustic, or classic styles. It all depends on the colour chosen, the level of texture, and the materials around it.
A softer, more textured concrete effect can work very well with wood, stone, or a more traditional decor without creating a cold or industrial result.
