Description:

Wood has always been the preferred material for countertops and cutting boards. The challenge? It is porous and can become stained if poorly protected. This is now a thing of the past, as Osmo TopOil is the hardwax-oil that combines performance, natural ingredients, and food safety certification.

Made from vegetable oils and natural waxes, Osmo TopOil penetrates deep into the wood to create an invisible, breathable, and liquid-resistant barrier. Surface maintenance is easy since daily spills (wine, coffee, juice, sauce) simply bead up on the surface without leaving persistent stains.

Osmo TopOil is ideal for protecting bare wood furniture surfaces such as kitchen countertops or solid wood butcher blocks, glulam, cork, and OSB indoors. This Osmo oil is also non-toxic and safe for children’s toys and cutting boards.

Osmo TopOil will enhance your wood with a durable, soft-to-the-touch satin-matte water-repellent finish. Unlike varnishes that peel, TopOil can be spot-repaired without sanding. It is undoubtedly the undisputed product for a healthy and elegant kitchen countertop.

Protect your wood now! With Osmo TopOil Countertop Oil, ensure a healthy and durable finish for your everyday surfaces.

Osmo TopOil is ready to use. Do not thin.

Available colors

* Note: Displayed colors may vary depending on screen, wood grain, texture, porosity, as well as preparation and application methods. It is recommended to test colors on a small sample because the tone may appear differently on other wood species.

Effect of the three options

The Clear TopOil 3056 enhances the natural tone of the wood (permanent wet look).

The Natural TopOil 3025 counters this effect and protects the wood almost invisibly.

The natural tone of the wood is preserved. On dark or reddish woods, it provides a slight white limed effect.

The Acacia TopOil 3026 has a transparent tint that gives the wood a noble character.

How to apply

Preparation

Before applying any Osmo product, proper sanding is essential.

(See pro tips below)

The wood surface must be clean and dry (maximum 20% moisture content).

Completely remove old varnishes.

Always wear a dust mask when sanding.

How to apply

Shake Osmo TopOil well before use.

  1. Using a lint-free cloth, such as Osmo Easy Pads, rub TopOil into the wood surface in a circular or “8” motion.
  2. Allow the oils to penetrate for about 15 minutes.
  3. Then brush in the direction of the grain with a brush or cloth to distribute the remaining product and remove excess. There should be no visible film or buildup on the surface. (If so, too much product was applied. Use a clean brush or a new lint-free cloth to remove the excess).
  4. Drying time: approximately 8 to 10 hours (in normal climatic conditions, 23 °C / 50% relative humidity). Lower temperatures and/or higher humidity can influence drying time.
  5. Ensure the room is well ventilated.

Second coat:

  1. Apply a second thin coat of TopOil evenly, rubbing it into the wood with a circular or “8” motion, as before.
  2. Wait 15 minutes to allow the product to penetrate, then rub and remove excess.
  3. Let dry for 8 to 10 hours.

Pro Tips

1. Choosing the right grit

For sanding furniture, we recommend using 150 to 180 grit by hand, versus 100-120 with a 5″ orbital sander. Sanding too coarsely leaves visible scratches, while too fine a grit (beyond 220) reduces the absorption capacity of the hardwax-oil, which decreases durability and stain resistance.

2. Sand in the direction of the grain

Always sand in the direction of the wood grain to avoid cross-grain scratches that cannot be hidden later.

3. Smooth progression

For a smoother finish, you can go up to 220 grit (by hand) especially for furniture, but stop at this stage. Avoid going beyond this to preserve the wood’s ability to absorb the finish.

4. Remove all dust

After sanding, thoroughly clean the surface using a tack cloth, microfiber cloth, or a vacuum with a brush attachment. Any residual dust will impair the adhesion of the hardwax-oil and prevent penetration, reducing durability and scratch resistance.

5. Apply in thin coats

When applying an Osmo product, apply very thin coats. Just enough to work the surface with circular or figure-eight motions using a pad or brush.

6. Optional sanding between coats

For an ultra-smooth result on furniture, lightly sand between coats up to 320 grit (by hand).

  • Q4: Can it be used on children’s toys?
