The Impel rod is an effective decay control system designed for the interior of logs. Intended for log homes, rim joists, utility poles, and structural timber.
Wood is a material of incredible strength. Properly protected, it can last almost indefinitely. When surface protection is insufficient for your exposed logs and timber, opt for boron rods, which allow for the strategic placement of the prescribed dose where it is needed. The Sansin protection system for the core and surface of the wood has been carefully designed to provide an ideal protection-to-price ratio.
How does it work?
The Impel Boron rod is a water-diffusible boron rod in a solid, highly concentrated form, derived from a natural preservative. It is inserted into the ends of logs where it remains inactive until moisture exceeds 25%. Under the action of water, it then diffuses boric acid, a natural decay inhibitor that combats the proliferation of fungi and insect invasions. As the rod dissolves slowly, the flow of natural moisture in the wood circulates the boric acid through the wood fibers to saturate and protect all wet areas.
When the wood dries and moisture levels drop, the fungicide stops acting and goes into standby mode, ready to reactivate if conditions leading to rot return. The Impel Boron rod is the only effective system for controlling internal decay in logs. When paired with a periodic wood preservative treatment, it offers high-performance protection against decay. The Impel Boron rod is recommended not only for log ends and corners but also for window and door frames, rim joists, posts, railroad ties, structural timber, and a wide range of decking, flooring, and roofing applications.
How to apply
Strategically place the Impel rods.
For optimal results, Impel Boron rods should be placed 8 to 18 inches apart. This distance can be reduced to 2 to 6 inches for very dense wood or wood facing exceptional moisture levels. Drill holes with a diameter approximately 1/16 inch larger than the rod diameter. (Impel rods are available in the following sizes: 8mm x 65mm, 12mm x 100mm, 18mm x 75mm)
Rods can be nested at your discretion, targeting areas deemed more exposed. However, it is very important to respect the optimal distance between rods.
Once the Impel rods are inserted, the drill holes must be sealed. You may use wood dowels or wood filler. If you choose the first option, ensure a minimum space of 1/8 inch is left between the Impel rod and the dowel. This measure is intended not to limit the expansion capacity of the Impel Rod.
Dowels should be removed every 3 to 5 years to check if Impel® Rods need replacement. The effectiveness of Impel® Rods can be significantly increased if a wood sealer or water-repellent stain is applied concurrently.
