Product description
Description:
Class “A” Fire-Retardant Varnish Topcoat
Flame Control No. 167 polyurethane fire-retardant wood varnish is a Class “A” topcoat.
It is used as a finish coat over No. 166 intumescent fire-retardant varnish. No. 167 is available in three finishes: low-gloss, semi-gloss, or gloss.
No. 166 must be applied before No. 167 to achieve a Class “A” fire rating.
* Note: For this fire-retardant product, the supplier does not provide a spread indication in minutes, but rather an effectiveness scale. Note that the higher the index, the less effective it is.
Recommended uses:
We recommend using No. 167 as a finish coat over No. 166 on all surfaces that will be subject to cleaning, handling, or where a low-gloss, semi-gloss, or gloss finish is desired. This significantly improves the durability and ease of cleaning of No. 166.
Used for:
Schools, colleges, nursing homes, childcare centers, hospitals, prisons, apartments, hotels, factories, warehouses, retail stores, restaurants, utilities, railway and other transportation companies, oil and chemical facilities, military installations, and other facilities requiring Class “A” fire-retardant coatings.
How to apply
How to apply
Preparation
After applying Flame Control No. 166 Class “A” intumescent fire-retardant varnish, allow the surface to dry for at least 48 hours. Remove all dust, dirt, etc. from the surface before applying Flame Control No. 167.
Application
Flame Control No. 167 topcoat can be applied by brush, roller, or spray.
Stir the product well before use, then apply a uniform coat at a coverage rate of 600 to 800 sq ft/US gallon (14.7 to 19.6 m²/L).
In high-traffic areas or where excessive wear is expected, a second coat is recommended. Allow at least 24 hours drying time between coats.
To comply with the surface burning characteristics established for this varnish, dilution of the varnish must be offset by reduced coverage rates.
Do not apply when surface or air temperature is below 10ºC.
Spray gun specification
Airless spray
Titan 440 Impact (or equivalent)
Pump pressure: 2000-2400 psi
Manifold and gun filter: 60 Mesh
Hose diameter: ¼”
Gun: LX-80 II with tip: 010 – .013
The varnish may be reduced with solvent up to a maximum of 7%.
Precautions
The liquid coating contains volatile (flammable) solvents. Caution should be exercised during and after application.
- Adequate ventilation must be provided during and after application until the coating is dry.
- Keep away from heat, sparks, and open flames. Do not smoke – extinguish all flames, pilot lights, and heaters – turn off stoves, electrical tools and appliances, and any other sources of ignition.
- Avoid skin contact and inhalation of vapors or spray mist. Close container after use.
Cleaning varnished surfaces
Never use water or water-based cleaners to clean surfaces finished with this system, as this will cause the surface appearance to become milky. Use only oil-based wood surface cleaners, such as those used for furniture cleaning.
Q&A
Q-My varnish turns milky after cleaning… why?
This is a common problem if you clean the varnish using water or water-based cleaners.
No. 167 is solvent-based. Water creates a reaction that produces a milky effect.
Use only wood cleaners designed for solvent-based finishes.
Q-My fire-retardant system doesn’t meet the standard… what did I do wrong?
You must use No. 167 as a topcoat over No. 166 to achieve Class A.
You don’t get complete, certified protection without the base coat.
Q-The varnish doesn’t adhere well or has defects… why?
In most cases, this is a preparation issue.
The most common causes are:
– a dirty or dusty surface
– The No. 166 coat is not completely dry.
To avoid this:
– wait a minimum of 48h after applying No. 166
– make sure to remove all traces of contaminants before applying No. 167
Q-My finish is not uniform (streaks, uneven sheen)… how do I avoid this?
This is often related to application. Possible causes include:
– coat too thin or uneven
– poor distribution with roller or spray gun
– poorly controlled dilution
There are several tips to avoid this:
– Follow the product coverage rate (600 sq ft/gallon) to ensure a uniform coat.
– Mix the varnish well before application by scraping the bottom with a stick
– Do not exceed a dilution of more than 7% with mineral spirits. (265 ml/gallon)
Q-The varnish dries slowly… is this normal?
Yes, it’s a solvent-based product, so drying time is longer
– to touch: approximately 4h
– between coats: 24h
Your varnish still isn’t dry after these times? Check:
– if ventilation is adequate
– if temperature is too low (below 10°C)
You can fix these problems by installing fans or heaters.
Q-My coating wears quickly in high-traffic areas… how can I avoid this?
No. 167 is designed for long-lasting protection, but a single coat is not sufficient in certain contexts.
The highest-risk areas are:
– hallways
– handrails
– handled surfaces
You can apply a second coat on these surfaces to ensure a more durable finish.
