Description
STEINA Transparent Wood Oil, a penetrating exterior oil stain!
Product description
Are you looking for an exterior wood oil stain that offers natural beauty, durability, and ease of application? STEINA exterior wood penetrating oil is designed for homeowners who want to protect their wood while fully preserving its grain, without compromising on quality. This 2-in-1 product stains and seals in a single step, with just one coat. Yes, it is a single-coat stain, which significantly reduces working time and the risk of error.
Unlike traditional stains that require tedious touch-ups or multiple successive coats, STEINA penetrates deeply into the wood and applies uniformly, without leaving marks or overloaded areas, even when using a sprayer. No more “back brushing” is needed, as it works like a dream and provides a flawless finish from the first application. The result is natural, slightly satin, and highlights the unique grain of each piece of wood.
This transparent tinted oil is perfect for exterior projects such as decks built more than 2 feet off the ground, fences, siding, and garden furniture. Apply it to dry wood in dry weather, and it will do the rest: protection against water, UV resistance, and durability season after season. Thanks to its oil-based formula, it deeply nourishes and seals the wood, while remaining easy to maintain over the years.
By choosing STEINA Exterior Wood Penetrating Oil, you avoid the complications of multi-coat products. You save time, reduce errors, and achieve a professional result. It is the ideal solution for discerning homeowners who want protected, beautiful, and worry-free exterior wood. A simple, effective, single-coat, and durable product, just as we like them.

How to apply
Wood Preparation
To allow Steina penetrating oil to perform at its maximum capacity on wood, it is essential to properly prepare the surface. The surface must be clean and completely dry. The wood’s moisture content must be below 12%. This oil is therefore usually not the right choice for decks built less than 2 feet off the ground.
Cleaning:
- Remove mold, dust, dirt, oils, and greases with Passeport Elite Deck Cleaner.
- Before starting cleaning, protect plants with protective tarps. Although Deck Cleaner is biodegradable, it can be abrasive to plants.
- Apply the cleaner generously to the surface using a roller, sprayer, or brush. If cleaning a vertical surface, always clean from bottom to top.
- Allow the product to act for 5 to 10 minutes. It is important not to let the product dry on the surface. Otherwise, you will have to clean again.
- Once this time has elapsed, rinse with clear water to remove the cleaner.
- Allow to dry completely before proceeding to the next steps.
Note: For very dirty surfaces, it is best to apply the cleaner twice.
Sanding:
Sanding is the step that allows Steina oil to perform and be absorbed uniformly into the wood planks. Although, according to the manufacturer, sanding is not mandatory before applying Steina oil, we strongly recommend it to our customers based on experience. This step is especially required for wood patio floor surfaces.
- Previous stains and sealers must be completely removed. You can use a stripper to remove particularly stubborn finishes.
- The wood must have a moisture content of 12% or less.
- Sand the surface using an 80 or 100 grit abrasive sandpaper with a 5-inch orbital sander.
- Always sand in the direction of the wood grain.
- Change sandpaper every 10 to 25 sq ft. (Do not skip this step! The oil is very transparent and will not hide any imperfections.)
- Once sanding is complete, remove sanding dust by sweeping or with a shop vacuum. Preferably do not rinse.
- The wood must be almost new or in good condition to achieve a beautiful result, as Steina oil will not conceal imperfections.
Note: It is important to apply Steina within days of sanding. Otherwise, the wood pores will close.
The product covers less surface area than a traditional stain because the oil is ULTRA penetrating. You can cover your dry wood surface the day before application with a tarp to prevent dew from moistening it. Do not cover the surface once oiled, as this finish must air dry.
Application of Steina Oil
Steina is an easy-to-apply penetrating oil. You can apply either a thick coat (depending on wood absorption) or 2 thin coats, wet on wet, 45 minutes apart between coats. (or 48-72 hours later once dry)
- Apply Steina with a stain brush, sprayer, or roller.
- First, perform a test on a small area to ensure the color is suitable for you.
- Apply a uniform coat of Steina oil. (Do not leave puddles of product on the ground)*
- If you wish to apply a second coat, allow it to dry for approximately 45 minutes when still damp, or after 48 hours (dry), before applying the second coat.
- Immediately clean application accessories and tools with a solvent such as citrus solvent.
- Once the application is complete, allow to dry for 48 to 72 hours.
Note: Drying time may vary depending on temperature, wood porosity, and humidity. Also, Steina exterior oil stain will achieve its final color after 7 to 10 days.
* If too much oil has been applied or a surplus persists after several days of drying (the surface will remain sticky as it has not been absorbed), the excess can be removed with a cloth soaked in citrus solvent or another similar solvent. Allow cloths to dry completely before discarding them to avoid combustion risks.
