How to apply
Preparation
Wood moisture:
Wood surfaces must be exposed to outdoor air before applying the oil to reduce their internal moisture content.
The recommended weathering period for untreated softwoods such as larch, pine, spruce, or hemlock
is approximately six weeks minimum of dry weather.
For pressure-treated wood, red or white cedar, thermally modified wood, and exotic
species, wait approximately 12 weeks.
Cleaning:
The surface must be clean and all contaminants must be removed with Osmo Decking Cleaner.
Important: A pressure washer can significantly increase moisture content beyond 20%. Since the wood will be too wet, it will reject the oil attempting to be absorbed, causing poor adhesion and protection. Surfaces prepared this way must therefore dry for longer, 2 to 3 weeks before applying the finish according to the manufacturer.

Sanding:
-New or old wood surfaces must be thoroughly sanded with P80 to P100 grit using an orbital or belt sander. For outdoor furniture, P120 to P150 grit is suggested.
– Change sandpaper regularly, as it can wear quickly and no longer open the wood grain adequately.
-Remove all traces of old finish or paint completely so the oil can be applied directly to bare wood.
Caution: we do not recommend using grit finer than P100 on decks. These finer grits could make the surface slippery and reduce oil absorption.
How to apply
1. If possible, apply the first coat to all sides of the boards before installation at a temperature between +5°C and 35°C. (Avoid direct sunlight)
2. Use a screw-on stain brush or 150 mm Osmo brush to apply Decking Oil in a thin, even coat, following the direction of the wood grain. Stain the entire board and never let the oil dry on half a board, as a difficult-to-hide line will appear.
3. Let dry 10 to 12 hours, then apply a second thin but sufficient coat, repeating the previous instructions. The dry surface appears shinier at first and then becomes satin.
Note: The finish can also be buffed into the wood with thin applications using a white non-abrasive pad or microfiber applicator pad.
Notes
Wood species and age can have a significant impact on the amount of Decking Oil you will need.
For example, older softwood decks will likely require more oil than a relatively new cedar deck that still contains a good amount of natural oil.
To test how much oil your deck will need:
– Apply a thin coat, let dry 10 to 12 hours, then apply a drop of oil in a corner. If the oil drop penetrates the wood, another coat can be applied.
-Repeat this process until the oil drop beads on the wood surface and is no longer absorbed into the wood. This indicates the wood has absorbed as much oil as possible and needs no more.

Q1- What is the difference between Osmo Decking Oil and a traditional acrylic stain?
A- Unlike film-forming stains that eventually peel or crack, Osmo penetrates the wood thanks to its natural oil-based formula. The finish remains microporous, forms no film, and never requires sanding for maintenance.
Q2- Does Osmo Decking Oil protect against UV and wood graying?
Yes, all pigmented shades offer effective UV protection.
Exception: shade 1277 Teak, which is clear and does not protect against UV rays.
Q3- Do I need to sand my deck before applying Osmo oil?
Yes, if it’s the first application. No if it’s for maintenance of a surface already protected with this oil. One of Osmo’s great advantages is that no sanding is required for maintenance or subsequent applications. Simply clean the surface and apply a new thin coat.
4- Can I apply Osmo over an old finish?
Yes, if the old finish is microporous and very similar to Osmo exterior oil. Simple cleaning or light sanding is sufficient. Since we cannot guarantee compatibility, testing on your part is required. If the surface is covered with varnish or a film-forming product, it must first be completely removed.
Q5- How many coats should I apply?
Two thin coats are recommended for optimal, long-lasting protection.
For a more natural or less pigmented effect, it is possible to apply a tinted shade as the first coat and the 1277 clear version as the second. Protection will then need to be refreshed sooner if exposed to sunlight, especially on horizontal surfaces.
