Description
Arabic Gum (Crackle Medium)
Description:
Arabic gum is not just a crackle medium. It has been used since ancient Egypt for making distempers. Some authors credit it with five thousand years of faithful service.
Arabic gum is secreted by an acacia that grows in Arabia and Africa. It is a widely used product of plant origin. Our Arabic gum powder dissolves very easily in hot water.
Use:
Arabic gum is used to make glues and paints. Arabic gum can be used in tempera recipes, it is a good thickener for gouaches and the best fixative for oil or soft pastels.
Crackle medium:
Arabic gum dissolves easily in warm water and can be used on its own to make a crackle medium by mixing one part Arabic gum to one part hot water. This crackle medium can be used with milk paints, Fusion paint, or any acrylic paints.
You can also add an equal part of fish glue to the Arabic gum already dissolved in water; it will dry less quickly and the thickness will be easier to control during application.
Let the mixture rest for 30 to 60 minutes so it clears before application. For a 100% translucent mixture, wait 24 hours.
Features:
Arabic gum is a natural product that is neutral or slightly acidic and contains calcium, magnesium, and potassium.
