Product Application
SURFACE PREPARATION
Proper surface preparation is crucial. The surface must be completely dry and free of dust, wax, grease, or oil. For porous materials, it is recommended to seal the surface with Passeport Elite Countertop Epoxy to prevent air bubbles from releasing during the curing process. Allow the Countertop Epoxy to dry for 16 to 24 hours before applying the Casting Epoxy.
NOTE: For projects where high adhesion is important, keep in mind that superior bond strength can be achieved by not applying a seal coat. If the seal coat has cured for more than 24 to 36 hours (depending on temperature), mechanically abrade and clean the surface before applying Passeport Elite Casting Epoxy.
MIXING
Warm the resin and hardener to 24-27 °C. This will improve flow characteristics and bubble release.
Pour exact amounts of resin (Part A) and hardener (Part B) into separate cups (2 parts resin A to 1 part hardener B). Stir separately. In a clean, dry container, mix the resin with the hardener. Stir for
3 to 4 minutes, making sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the container. After mixing, transfer the mixture to a similar container and stir again for 1 to 2 minutes.
APPLICATION
Pour the mixture into the mold. Wait 15 to 20 minutes, then pass a propane torch flame over the surface at a 45° angle, with the torch tip at least 6 in (15 cm) from the surface. Continue until all bubbles have disappeared.
The carbon dioxide at the tip of the flame helps release and pop bubbles.
If latent bubbles appear 30 minutes later, re-torching may be necessary. Drips can be sanded once the surface has cured. Pour epoxy to a maximum thickness of 3 inches (7.5 cm) per layer. For pours exceeding 18 L in volume, reduce the maximum thickness and perform multiple pours.
IMPORTANT
The product will begin to cure rapidly if exposed to excessive heat.
CURING TIME
Allow at least 84 hours for drying and at least 7 days for full cure. Temperature, volume, and humidity affect curing time.
CLEANING
Immediately after use, clean all equipment with xylene. Always wear goggles and gloves to avoid contact with the product. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water.
IMPORTANT
Once the product has cured, it can only be removed by sanding.
RESTRICTIONS
- – Store in a dry place between 24 and 27 °C and away from sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
- – Unused resin and hardener must be left in their original containers. Do not leave resin or hardener in an open container.
- – Application should be performed when humidity is below 60% and temperature is between 21 and 29 °C.
- – This product must be used within one year of purchase.
- – The epoxy surface may discolor if exposed to ultraviolet rays.
- – Do not apply outdoors.
- – When properly mixed and cured, this epoxy is safe for direct food contact. However, as the customer is responsible for following mixing and application guidelines, each project should be evaluated individually to confirm the product has fully cured and is therefore safe for direct food contact.
