Recommended Uses
HP1320 Universal Rust-Inhibitive Metal Primer is a high-performance coating for direct application on ferrous metals such as steel and iron.
It provides interior and exterior steel surfaces with corrosion resistance in mildly corrosive conditions.
This product can also serve as a tie coat over existing coatings that will be topcoated with a high-performance finish.
It can be applied on new surfaces or properly prepared rusted surfaces. Designed to be topcoated with a finish paint of your choice.
HP1320 Universal Metal Primer is designed for use in food processing facilities, as it is approved by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
Restrictions
Do not use on non-ferrous metals such as galvanized metal and aluminum, or in immersion service.

Preparation
Remove oil, grease, dirt, mildew, or any other surface contaminant with HP6000 Oil Grease Emulsifier (concentrated cleaner) or the solvent cleaning method (SSPC-SP1).
Ferrous metals: Before applying the product, remove loose rust and mill scale. For exposure to severe conditions, commercial blast cleaning is recommended (minimum cleanliness standard SSPC-SP6). Pépin Metal Conditioner can also help with cleaning and treating persistent surface rust.
Small surfaces can be cleaned with a hand tool (SSPC-SP2 method), a power tool (SSPC-SP3 method), or a power tool to achieve bare metal surface (SSPC-SP13 method).
A surface covered with tightly adhering rust can be coated with this primer provided it is subjected to mild conditions only.
Previously painted surfaces: Clean with HP6000 Oil Grease Emulsifier or with solvent as indicated above. Passeport Elite Biodegradable Degreaser also effectively cleans stains, grease, oils, and other contaminants from all surfaces.
Sand glossy surfaces and remove loose, flaking, or peeling paint before applying the primer.
Application
To properly mix the product before application, use a drill with a mixing paddle at low speed for best results.
The primer can be applied with a natural bristle brush or with a 3/8″ (10 mm) nap roller or synthetic nap roller between 1/4-1/2″ (6-13 mm).
Airless spray (do not thin) :
Pressure: 1,500 – 2,200 psi, Tip: 0.013 – 0.017
Air-assisted spray (pressure fluid tank):
