Use
Alchemy is best suited to indoor projects, as it is not designed for outdoor durability.
This limestone-and-chalk acrylic paint is outstanding for creating furniture effects and never-before-seen looks!
For high-traffic surfaces such as kitchen cabinets, we recommend Fusion Mineral Paint instead if extra protection is not desired, as it is self-sealing and built to last. Otherwise, you can also apply a durable topcoat over Alchemy for high-use areas.
Alchemy is perfect for creating a distressed look!
Here’s how to achieve a distressed effect:
- Light sanding along edges and raised areas.
- Use a damp cloth to subtly remove paint in specific spots (a dust-free alternative to sanding).
- Layer colors and sand through the different coats to create depth and dimension.
- Add Fresco! The ultimate tool to pair with Alchemy to create texture and dimension and let your creativity run free with your chosen colors.
Alchemy limestone-and-chalk acrylic paint can also be diluted to create “LIME WASH” effects on walls.
Dry time:
- Dry to the touch: 30 minutes to 1 hour
- Second coat: after 1 to 2 hours
- Protection (varnish, wax, oil, etc.): after 8 to 12 hours (1 to 2 hours for wax)
- Full cure (maximum durability): approx. 21 days
Pro tips:
Adding a touch of water to the product or misting a fine spray of water with the Fusion Water Mister for Paint during application makes it easier to achieve a perfectly smooth textured surface.
Extra protection and finishing
Alchemy does not necessarily require a protective topcoat, but it is not recommended for areas exposed to water or subject to heavy use.
Dark, very matte shades like Onyx are beautiful, but they come with a few drawbacks. Alchemy is a chalk-style paint and therefore does not have a built-in finish like Fusion™ Mineral Paint. Dark colors can show fingerprints, slight mottling, and dust more easily when they are not sealed. This is part of the nature of a matte finish.
That’s why Fusion developed Ultra Guard, a water-based polyurethane that levels beautifully over both light and dark colors. It preserves the richness of colors such as Onyx without leaving marks or dulling the finish.
Fusion offers a wide range of finishes, including clear or tinted waxes for a subtle sheen and added dimension.
For more sheen, durability, or protection, we recommend the following for a smooth, long-lasting finish in high-traffic areas (wait 8 to 12 hours for the paint to dry):
- Multi-Protech Varnish by Evo
- Fusion Tough Coat Protective Sealer
- Ultra Guard
- Ligna Pronto Finishing Oil for a rich, aged effect.

How to apply
Preparation
Clean your surface to remove dust, grease, or residue. Use a phosphate-free organic degreaser for cleaning. Just make sure there is no wax already on the surface.
How do you know if the surface is waxed?
If you suspect your piece has previously been waxed, you can usually check by running fine sandpaper over the surface. If wax is present, the sandpaper will clog and little wax balls will form. You can also run your fingernail over it to see if anything builds up underneath. If so, it’s probably wax and it must be removed with citrus solvent, mineral spirits, or our odorless solvent.
Alchemy offers excellent adhesion directly to most surfaces with minimal prep. While sanding and priming are rarely necessary, for smooth surfaces such as laminate, ceramic, or glass, a light sanding will improve adhesion.
Optional: Use Ultra Grip primer for very glossy or smooth surfaces. (glass, plastic, ceramic)
How to apply
With a brush in hand, Alchemy unlocks your full creative potential. This product is not intended for spray application.
- Dip your brush only halfway, making sure it’s well loaded but not dripping. (Brush marks are often caused by too much paint drying and creating texture.)
- Apply 1 to 2 coats of Alchemy paint.
- The Fusion mister will be your ally for creating a smooth finish on a large surface.
- Let each coat dry completely for 1 to 2 hours before applying the next.
- Some bright shades require multiple coats for optimal coverage.
Don’t forget you can mix Alchemy colors to create custom shades.
