Product Description:

SRD RE PROLUXE is a semi-transparent stain composed of an alkyd and linseed oil blend. Single-coat application protects multiple types of exterior wood surfaces. SRD can be applied on decks as well as siding, shingles, and fences. This easy-to-use coating offers excellent protection against UV rays and moisture while allowing color transparency.

If you have a choice among Proluxe products for a wood deck flooring project, SRD stain would be the best choice as it is less susceptible to peeling. This is due to its thinner surface film. However, if you want to stain a more humid surface, such as a patio installed directly on the ground, it would be preferable to consider a product that tolerates a higher moisture content in the wood.

Key properties:

  • Single-coat application (1 coat) for easy and quick maintenance
  • Water-resistant finish that protects against UV rays
  • Formula reinforced with iron oxide pigments to fight mildew and aging
  • Less film-forming finish than other formulas in the Sikkens Proluxe range
  • SRD is the most liquid and penetrating stain in the Proluxe range

Preparation

The wood must be perfectly clean, dry, and freshly sanded with 80-grit using an electric orbital sander to remove any graying or milling patina (new wood). This important step ensures proper opening of the wood pore so it can absorb the stain uniformly and sufficiently. For all other cleaning preparation tips, consult this explanatory article!: https://colobar.ca/sikkens-srd-une-solution-simple-et-economique-pour-proteger-le-bois-exterieur/

How to apply

The wood must be completely dry at the time of application following cleaning or rain. Ideally, its moisture content will be 12%-18% maximum. To avoid complications, it is important to wait 48h after rain or cleaning before applying SRD and to have 2 rain-free days following application. You will therefore need a 4-day rain-free window.

Proluxe SRD can be applied at temperatures between 10 and 32℃. If the wood is hot or the sun is beating down on the surface, do not proceed with application.

The best tools for applying SRD Proluxe to your wood are the detachable handle brush and the natural or synthetic bristle brush.

The product could be sprayed on the surface with a sprayer, but in this case, you must immediately go over it with a brush to ensure the stain penetrates the wood properly and uniformly.

Apply the stain board by board, following the direction of the wood grain.

Always keep the edge wet to avoid lap marks.

Once the board is finished, continue in the same manner on the other boards.

For maximum protection, apply stain to all accessible surfaces, including cut ends.

Since horizontal surfaces are exposed to more abrasion and moisture, it is better to apply a coat of SRD every year to prevent the product from wearing down to the wood. This way, sanding is avoided and a good cleaning is sufficient before applying the refresher coat.

For vertical surfaces, apply a new coat every 3 to 4 years, depending on the wood’s sun exposure.
