Description:
Flame Control E-119 is a water-based, interior intumescent latex paint designed specifically for application on gypsum walls and ceilings.
Flame Control E-119 Class A fire-retardant paint has been tested in accordance with ASTM test methodology and can slow the spread of fire and withstand flames for up to two hours. Under heat, it expands and forms an insulating foam that delays fire spread and protects drywall surfaces. This works by forming a dense protective char layer that insulates the substrate. It is ideal for added indoor fire-risk protection.
According to the supplier, the intumescent coating can be topcoated with Flame Control 40-40 for a different look and increased durability.
It is a washable paint with a glossier finish that is itself fire-retardant. Flame Control E-119 (2 hours) can be applied in a single coat, saving application time and reducing labour costs.

How to apply
Surface preparation
Previously painted surfaces
Flame Control E-119 (2-hour) coating can be applied directly over existing paint that is in good condition. All glossy surfaces must be sanded to promote proper adhesion.
An ultra-bonding primer coat should be applied as needed to ensure proper adhesion, for example over an oil-painted or very glossy surface.
Recommendation: Benjamin Moore Prime ALL
All surfaces to be painted must be clean and dry. All dirt, grease, oils, waxes, and other surface contaminants must be properly removed before applying Flame Control E-119 (2-hour) intumescent coating.
The Passeport Elite biodegradable degreaser cleaner is recommended.
New gypsum surface
New gypsum must first be sealed with a primer-sealer for new drywall before applying the intumescent coating. Recommendation: Benjamin Moore Aqua-Lock.
It is very important that Flame Control E-119 is thoroughly mixed before application.
Improper mixing could compromise protective performance in certain areas. Using a drill-mounted mixer is recommended.
Application
Flame Control E-119 (2 hours) can be applied with a polyester brush, a nap roller, or an airless sprayer (3000 PSI with a 517–531 tip or equivalent), but it is essential to maintain the recommended film thickness. To achieve the 2-hour rating, one gallon must cover an area of 80 ft².
A single generous coat covering only 80 ft² can be applied to save time, but it will be at the expense of appearance because there will be a lot of runs. That is why, in practice, it is preferable to apply the intumescent paint in 2 coats at a rate of 160 ft² per gallon per coat.
Dry time is 1 to 2 hours to the touch. The technical data sheet indicates a minimum of 2 to 4 hours between coats. However, technical service professionals suggest that, if return-to-service time is not too tight, you should wait overnight so everything dries perfectly.
